What happened

On Saturday afternoon, IRONMAN told more than 3,000 athletes that Sunday’s IRONMAN Calella-Barcelona would not go ahead — less than 24 hours before the start. The race was sold out.

Catalan authorities had activated the emergency phase of their flood-response plan, suspending outdoor sporting events across 20 areas including Maresme, where Calella sits. IRONMAN has named no replacement date and said only that “further communications on next steps and options for impacted athletes will be shared in due course.”

It was the second cancellation in a week: IRONMAN 70.3 New York (Jones Beach, September 26) was called off the day before its race as a coastal storm threatened the region.

Why this matters to you even if you weren’t there

A cancelled race is the moment a training plan earns its keep — or falls apart. Thousands of athletes in Calella are right now deciding whether to chase a late-season replacement or roll their fitness into next year. If it happens to you, here’s the playbook.

The 48-hour pivot playbook

  1. Take 2–3 easy days. You were peaked. Your body was owed a deload whether or not you raced — take it now instead of a “rage week” of hard training to prove something.
  2. Decide the goal, not the date. Same season or next year? Everything flows from this one call.
  3. If it’s the same season, pick a replacement 4–8 weeks out. Your fitness holds that long on reduced volume. Check what’s still open — IRONMAN Portugal is October 17, and the TriTrain race guides list late-season options with entry fees and contact info.
  4. Re-plan, don’t restart. You don’t need another base block. Hold fitness for 2–4 weeks, then sharpen into the new date. The fitness is banked; don’t spend it twice.
  5. Protect the headspace. A cancelled race is not a failed season. The 3,000 athletes in Calella trained just as hard as anyone racing Kona this Saturday — their fitness didn’t evaporate with the start list.

The honest pitch

Race dates move. Weather cancels. Bodies break. The best plan isn’t the one that looks perfect on paper — it’s the one that adapts when reality intervenes. That’s the whole idea behind TriTrain: a plan that re-plans with you.
